Environmental campaigners have urged people to do their bit to slash litter fires that cost taxpayers million of pounds a year.

Last year there were nearly 5,000 fires involving rubbish and flytipping in Strathclyde, peaking around bonfire night and costing around £10million in emergency callouts and thousands more in damage.

Charity Keep Scotland Beautiful have now launched a ‘Clean Up Scotland’ campaign.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “We all have a role to play to prevent fires involving litter and flytipping by not creating it in the first place.”
