Take a stroll Down Memory Lane...

Our picture shows Crossford-based football club Clydeside Rovers in 1922, after beating a team from Douglas Water to win the Menzies Cup. The team was founded in 1919 and played on top of the disused Annabell Bing. The photo is taken from Stenlake’s new book, Clyde Valley In The Olden Days.

50 YEARS AGO

* Kirkstyle Royal Arch Chapter held its annual Burns Supper. Chairman R.N Watson was ill so the chair was occupied by Mr Tom Ballantyne.

* A driver was fined £5 at Lanark Sheriff Court after his car collided with another vehicle in Carluke High Street. The electrician had only had his licence for four months.

* St Johns Church was staging the Singapore Story. It told the story of the invasion by the Japanese through one man’s eyes and was said to be a big hit with the public.

* A lorry sank four feet into a water filled hole when part of the Glasgow to Carlisle Road, near the Star Inn, Lesmahagow, caved in. The lorry was undamaged.

* Carluke Merchants Association decided to re-introduce a spring and autumn holiday - the first for many years.

* At the AGM of Carluke Amateur Operatic Society John Wright presented honorary pianist Mrs Adamson with a silver sandwich tray in recognition of her excellent work with the society.

* Forth Wanderers outside right Ralph Mackie asked for a transfer. He had trials with a number of senior clubs.

100 YEARS AGO

* At Lanark Sheriff Court Mr William Tennant, son of Thomas Tennant took on the role of Depute Fiscal. His father was also a Fiscal at the court.

* A mole catcher successfully sued a farmer after the farmer refused to pay him for his services. The mole catcher was awarded £3 with the farmer ordered to pay £1 0s 10d in expenses.

* A Braidwood Band of Hope meeting took place with Mr James Lynch presiding. It was noted that a number of solos were tastefully rendered by a musical party from Carluke.

* Two Lanark poachers were convicted of trespassing on the Cleghorn Estate in search of rabbits. The pair were fined 10s each.

* The AGM of Carluke Horticultural Society was held with an increase in membership and income. All office bearers were re-elected.

* Among the adverts in the Gazette were tailor WM Gilchrist, a treat in old Scotch whiskies from McGhies of Carluke and the latest in pictorial postcars from stationers A Beveridge.

* Douglaswater Thistle defeated Carluke Milton Rovers 3-2 in a thrilling match.
