TEN YEARS AGO

* it was revealed that supermarket chain Somerfield had bought Carluke’s Safeway store. Somerfield had purchased a total of 59 smaller Safeway stores across the UK and 114 in the UK with the deal costing them £260 million.

* A group of Clyde Valley residents banded together to combat the threats of a local landowner to destroy his own forest. The new organisation, known as Treewatch, was set up in Crossford and Hazelbank to monitor the owner of Carfin Wood who threatened to destory the woodland since a stretch of the Clyde Walkway was driven through his land.

* Forth couple George and Ruby Fowler celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Meanwhile it was a different anniversary for the ladies of Forth and Wilsontown WRI who celebrated 75 years since its founding.

* members of Lanark Art Group were preparing to host its 13th annual exhibition. The previous year the group had raised over £700 for breast cancer charities.

* Carluke woman Amanda Muncie successfully climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia raising £500 for charity. Social sciences student Amanda enjoyed the three and a half hour ascent.

* Engineer Jim McAllister received a certificate for Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers. John was presented with the award by ICE president Douglas Oakervee.

* Quothquan kid David Frame enjoyed the weekend of his life in Yorkshire by winning the Ministox Racing World Club Championship. The 16-year-old had amassed an amazing 100 trophies in just two years in the sport.

* High flying Biggar Rugby were brought down to earth with a bang with a crushing 53-16 defeat by Glasgow Hawks.

* Cleaning the town of graffiti earned Carluke High School pupils a top environmental award. The school was named the winner of the council’s Environmental Award Scheme after 30 pupils, under the guidance of assistant head teacher Jack McLellan, tackled five prominent buildings in the town.

* A crossford man called on Scottish Secretary Malcolm Rifkind to back his plans for two major developments in the Clyde Valley. William Welsh wanted to develop a total of 30 houses and flats opposite the Tillietudlem Hotel in Crossford and also wanted to set up a nursing home in nearby Lanark Road.

* Law Ambulance Station reached its target of £17,000 in its HeartStart Appeal. Thanks to the public’s generosity three life-saving defibrillators were purchased with the remaining money being sent to the British Heart Foundation.

* Clydesdale councillors were set to mount stiff opposition to a controversial plan to set up toll booths on the proposed new Fast Link dual carriageway which was set to be carved through the heart of Clydesdale. Biggar councillor Tom McAlpine branded the proposals “an absolute disgrace” with planning chairman Martin Wardlaw stating “The Government have got it wrong.”

* Youngsters at Carluke Primary School were flying high after being given a giant aeroplane. The 10ft by 8ft plane was built at Carstairs State Hospital.

* Children’s author Mairi Hedderwick visited St Mary’s Primary School in Lanark to promote her books. Meanwhile, Taggart star Mark McManus was set to appear at Carluke Library to promote his new book Taggart’s Glasgow.

* Residents in Cleghorn failed in their bid to block a new development of nine houses in their village. Their claims that the extra traffic would pose a hazard on local roads were dismissed by Clydesdale District Council planners who granted planning permission.

* Colin McRae upstaged his dad Jimmy in the final round of the British Open Rally Championship - and served a warning that he would be bidding for top honours the following season. The 21-year-old steered his Sierra Cosworth to third place along with partner Derek Ringer.

* Biggar overturned a six point half time deficit to defeat Royal High School FP 19-13 and climb up the Division Three table.
