TEN YEARS AGO

* dad of three Alan Hill voiced his fears that someone could be knocked over and killed in Glenafeoch Road if speed restrictions were not enforced there immediately. Alan, a resident of the Carluke street, slammed motorists for speeding on a road narrowed on both sides by parked cars.

* youngsters on the pupil council at Carluke’s St Athanasius Primary School raised a total of £3600 for three charities. Missio got £1800, another £1000 went to SCIAF and Colombia charity Let The Children Live got £800.

* nine “executive homes” were to be built at Cornhill House Hotel in Coulter despite Historic Scotland claiming they would have a harmful effect on the character of the estate. Councillors approved detailed planning consent for the two-storey houses next to the B-listed building.

* plans to transform Carnwath’s Sir John Mann Park into a nature and games park in Carnwath as part of a £700,000 development were unveiled by Carnwath 2000, in the hope of breathing new life into the village.

* police were hunting sick vandals who had destroyed an elderly disabled woman’s buggy while she was having lunch with a friend. Wilma Turner, from Douglas Street, Carluke, was “devastated and livid” to discover her disability buggy – her lifeline – had been torn to shreds.

* motherwell fc skipper Scott Leitch vowed his team would “have a go” at Celtic when they visited Parkhead for that season’s opening fixture on Sunday, August 8. Leitch said he had “high hopes” for teenage ’Well striker David Clarkson, whom he felt could do well if he got a bit stronger.

* clydesdale’s young golfers romped to a 13-11 victory when representing Scotland against their Swedish counterparts in golf’s Viking Trophy at Blekinge, Sweden.

TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO

* groups of local youths had been soaking up more than the sun when scorching temperatures brought shirt-sleeved crowds to the Market Square in Carluke. And their calling card had been all too evident... a trail of empty beer cans and bottles littering the gardens and leaving council workmen with a mammoth clean-up task.

* parents in Law had rallied round to ensure a summer fun bonanza for local kids. A team of around 20 helpers had been formed to keep the activities going each Tuesday and Thursday for five weeks in the local community centre.

* plans for a major development of around 400 houses near Lesmahagow looked set to finally go ahead...after an on/off saga spanning 20 years. Motherwell-based James Y Keanie Ltd had been given permission to start work on building 46 new homes at Hillpark Estate in the Clannochdyke area. That was the first phase of a huge housing estate which would eventually cover 30 acres.

* a £4000 reward was being offered for people giving information leading to the capture and conviction of four armed masked men responsible for terrorising an elderly couple in Braidwood. Bob and May Forrest of Headspoint Nursery had been tied up and threatened in their own home before being robbed of a considerable amount of money.

* spain still seemed to be the favourite holiday destination for most people. With that weekend seeing the start of the Glasgow Fair holiday, many people had their bags packed. And, according to local travel companies, Spain and the Spanish islands were still top of the hot-spots with holidaymakers.

* Former Carluke High School pupil Linda Young, of 17 Douglas Street, Carluke, had graduated as a BSc pharmacy degree with first class honours from Strathclyde University. She was to take up an appointment with Boots in Hamilton.

* carnwath Golf Club was to host the prestigious Lady Lockhart De Robeck Trophy that weekend, a popular 36-hole scratch tournament which had attracted a high quality field of 75 scratch and low handicap players.Defending his title would be Scottish youth international Graham King from Shotts, who had lifted the trophy the previous year following a play-off with George Crawford from Williamwood.

* lanark Bowling Club won the Jackson Trophy, the premier competition run by the South Lanarkshire Bowling Association.
