Macpherson leads by example

With Scottish Hockey’s indoor season put to bed, players who had hibernated emerged from weeks of inactivity to an unfamiliar outdoor landscape of bright sunshine at the weekend - with distinctly mixed results.

But the PSL Team Sports Clydesdale men were clearly bursting with pent-up energy in the men’s Arthur McKay Scottish Cup last 32 round.

Captain Ross McPherson led from the front against Harris Academy as an avalanche of home goals peppered the back of the visitors’ net at Titwood.

A total of 16 Clydesdale strikes found their target, five of them scored by McPherson himself.

Elsewhere, despite the sunshine, the Giffnock men’s cup tie against Glasgow Academicals was postponed. But in the women’s cup, Giffnock’s first team enjoyed a 4-1 away win against Stirling Wanderers, although their A team had to cede a walkover to Grange.

Worryingly, Milne Craig Clydesdale Western were also the beneficiaries of a walkover in their scheduled match against Erskine Stewarts-Melville.

But the second-division Western A team won a famous 4-3 victory over local first division rivals Glynhill Hotel Kelburne - just one of a day of cup shocks in the women’s tournament.
