LANARK was at the forefront of Team Europe’s stunning fightback from 10-6 down to win the Ryder Cup against the Americans at Medinah Country Club in Chicago on Sunday night.
For all the European stars – including world number one Rory McIlroy and four-point hero Ian Poulter – wore gear made at the Glenmuir factory in Delves Road, Lanark.
Glenmuir managing director Colin Mee, who was there to see all the drama unfold, said that the decision by European captain Jose Maria Olazabal for his team to wear shirts adorned with the image of his late Ryder Cup partner Seve Ballesteros had been “inspirational”.
“The reaction to the kit was excellent,” Colin said.
“But we were always confident due to the fact that Jose Maria was involved in all aspects of the design and colours.
“The final day of this year’s Ryder Cup was truly remarkable.
“The atmosphere on the course was electric. Although outnumbered, the European fans could be heard cheering on all the players.”
It’s not very often that the products of a Clydesdale-based business are viewed on live television by millions of viewers. But that’s what happened on Sunday as Europe sealed the cup thanks to German Martin Kaymer’s dramatic last-hole victory over gutted American Steve Stricker.
