For Willie (64) managed a mammoth Stableford score of 38 points to win the individual category at the annual Clydesdale Sports Council Celeb-Am tournament.

Event organiser Colin McKendrick said: “Willie plays off a 16 handicap and managed to score very well.

“He is obviously a good all rounder on the golf course.”

It is the first time Willie has ever won this competition and he received the Joe Baker Trophy from Clydesdale Sports Council chairman, Millar Stoddart.

Willie remains a firm favourite among Motherwell fans thanks to a stellar stint at the club which saw the forward net 80 goals in 146 appearances in claret and amber between 1972 and ’79.

And there was also a football link to the individual runners-up prize at Lanark, as that went to ex-Kilmarnock defender Garry Hay (41), who amassed 36 points.

Ex-Celt Tom Boyd and former Rangers star Gordon Smith both posted 31-point hauls, only to miss out on third place to after-dinner speaker Joe Camay on the basis of Camay’s better inward half.

As far as the team competition was concerned, top honours went to the Scottish Fire and Rescue squad of William Steele, Craig Rowan and Gary Tudhope, who combined with ex-Celtic player and now radio pundit Mark Wilson to win with a 127-total, which consisted of their best two net scores on each hole.

In second place was the Clydesdale Club Captains side consisting of John McNeil (Carluke GC), Syd Powell (Carnwath GC), Derek Cuthbertson (Hollandbush GC) and Andy Usher (Biggar GC), who accumulated a total of 127 strokes.

In third position was the Scottish Sun quartet of ex-footballer Frank MacAvennie and journalists Andy Swinburne, Jim Patrick and Jim Brough.

Colin, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s development officer, added: “The feedback from everybody who played was very positive.

“The weather was pretty good and the course was in excellent condition.

“Sixteen teams took part and it was probably the best celebrity line-up we’ve had for a good number of years.

“Also included in the line-up were Gordon Dalziel, Bertie Auld, Kris Commons, Dixie Deans and Alison Walker.

“They appreciate the amount of work that is put in towards organising the competition, which is nice.”
