Garscube on form in relay championship

Teams from Garscube Harriers performed well when they competed in the Masters Road Relays at Strathclyde Park last Saturday.

The ladies’ team consisting of Lesley Chisholm, Marion Kelly and Arlene Brendan finished in second place, behind a very strong Dumfries team.

And there was individual success for Lesley who recorded the fastest time of the day – and set a new course record – by covering the 3.8 mile route in 20 minutes 59 seconds.

Marion’s leg was timed as 25.39 while Arlene clocked 23.37.

Garscube men won the V50 prize - and finished 11th overall - with a strong team consisting of Davie Dickson (22 minutes 45 seconds, Paul O’Brien (22.44), Alex Chisholm (22.56) and Rob McLellan (21.42).

It was a busy day for the club with a number of Garscube runners also competing, closer to home, in the Nigel Barge 10K.

Starting and finishing in the Garscube estate, and taking in an undulating and challenging route, it’s one of the most hotly contested in the race calendar.

The race, which commemorates Nigel Barge who was killed in action in Dunkirk during World War II, has run every year since 1943 and is one of Scotland’s oldest road races.

Alan Blair was first home for Garscube in fourth position with 34:09, with Garry Mathew hot on his heels in 34:11 in fifth position.
