Former Partick Thistle defender Kinniburgh feels for Jags after relegation

Despite only being two points adrift of second bottom Queen of the South with a game in hand and nine games still to play themselves, the Jags are going down to League 1 as the SPFL decided to end the coronavirus-hit season 2019-20 season early.

Kinniburgh (35), who made 79 appearances for Thistle between 2008 and 2012, said: “I’m absolutely devastated at the moment with the way it’s working out with this shambles that is the SPFL vote with Thistle getting relegated.

“So I just hope that they bounce back from that.

“It’s hard isn’t it? It’s really difficult. There’s never going to be an answer that everybody’s happy with.

“But with all the options available, my own personal opinion is I thought you could have promoted Brora and Kelty - just moving two up - and had a bigger league where nobody was getting relegated.

“It’s one thing being stone bottom and having no chance of survival, right fair enough.

“But to have a game in hand and only be a couple of points behind the team that if you win you go above them, that’s a sore one.”

Former Motherwell star Kinniburgh, who now works as a policeman, had some of the happiest times of his playing career with Partick.

“I really enjoyed my time there,” Kinniburgh said. “Where the club is unfortunately means that most people in the area are supporting the Old Firm.

“But they do really well and the fans are very, very loyal.

“And when they’re doing well they do get a decent turnout.”
