Carstairs teenager Lyle Walker is World Taekwon-do Champion

IT’S not often that you can say Clydesdale has produced a world champion - but that’s exactly the case as Carstairs teenager Lyle Walker basks in the glory of a World Taekwon-do Championship.

Sixteen-year-old Lyle, a member of Scotia TKD Club in Carluke, won the ITF World Cup under-85 kg sparring in Brighton, meaning he has been undefeated in the UK over the past two years.

Not to be outdone, younger brother Lewis (14) also made the final of the under-75kg but in the end had to settle for the silver.

The medals capped a fantastic few days for the Scotia team, which also saw head instructor and national sparring coach David Condie’s Scottish veterans team take gold for patterns and silver for sparring, narrowly missing out in the final round against Argentina.

Fourteen-year-old Megan Smillie, from Law, also won a bronze in the team sparring.

Fiona Trainer, from Scotia TKD, said: “Lyle has become one of the most formidable fighters in the country and at well over six feet and only 16-years-old there is nothing to stop him from doing whatever he wants in the world on Taekwon-do and martial arts generally.”
