Police are appealing for information after the reception of a Travelodge was destroyed on the day it was due to be opened for the first time.

Footage posted online shows a man driving repeatedly driving a digger into the new building, which was under construction on Edge Lane, Liverpool.

Video shows that there were construction workers inside the building when it was attacked, but despite one being treated for eye irritation due to exposure to diesel, there were no major injuries.

The rampage started at around 3pm, and continued for 20 to 30 minutes according to eyewitnesses, before the driver left the vehicle and ran away.

“The handover was today, everything completed, we’d put the last tile in, cleaned up and made sure everything was perfect,” said ceiling fixer Samuel White.

“Then some idiot in a mini digger decided to drive through the middle of the building.”

Payment dispute

It is believed the driver was taking out his frustrations on the hotel, having not been paid for his work, a dispute involving up to £600 in unpaid wages.

“There were loads of workers outside all gobsmacked, jaws to the floor wondering what’s going on,” White said.

“The site manager was running around like a headless chicken, he wasn’t happy at all.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the driver replace his wages and to help with any legal fees he will likely face after the incident.

It says: “This GoFundMe has been created to help fund the lost wages for the Travelodge – Edge Lane digger driver who is owed £600 in unpaid wages. £600 is to be given directly to the driver with any extra used to pay any possible legal fees which may have arisen as a result of the demolition of the Travelodge.”
