On Tuesday 27 October, Kardashian West posted a thread of tweets on Twitter, discussing how the world has changed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic as she turned 40.

She wrote, “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”

The reality TV star included photos of herself and her family and friends enjoying their time on the island without social distancing protocols.

Her tweets were quickly turned into a meme, with Twitter users reposting Kardashian West’s original tweet with increasingly bizarre pictures, like scenes from The Wickerman, Animal Crossing and the Fyre Festival documentary.

While some users joked about her tweet, others were quick to point out how problematic and tone deaf her message was, given the current circumstances.

Worldwide, the Covid-19 virus has killed more than one million people, and in the US alone, over 220,000 lives have been lost.

People are dying’

On Twitter, one person wrote, “Kim this might be the most tone deaf thing you’ve ever posted. People are dying, losing their incomes and starving right now.”

Another tweeted, “It’s not a good look to share gleeful news like this while people are struggling and dying. Look at me, I’m crazy rich, can get tested everyday, fly my friends to private islands and pretend the hell you’re living in doesn’t exist. Oh, wait, it doesn’t for me. I’m rich!”

“I’m really happy for you. My dad died and we couldn’t have a funeral,” wrote another.

Some users jumped to Kardashian’s defence, though, arguing that the family didn’t put anyone at risk since they were on a private island and travelled via private plane, and that they are entitled to spend their money however they wish.
