The Lanark front page story looks at hopes that the Royal Burgh could argue successfully to have its rail service to Edinburgh reconnected after many years, while the Carluke front reports on the New Beginnings Christmas Appeal.

That was a success in terms of what it did for children who otherwise would not have been getting presents from Santa, but an indictment of society as the need for its work has grown.

Inside we reveal two Clydesdale residents to receive awards in the New Year’s Honours List, and there are photos from the New Year celebrations at Biggar Bonfire and Lanark Het Pint.

There are more details of the Antiques Roadshow forthcoming visit to New Lanark, and a superb selection of photos from Robert Owen Primary School’s nativity play.

All this, plus all your usual district news and sport, in the shops first thing tomorrow.
