St Luke’s Bell Tower restored to its former glory

The bell tower in St Luke’s cemetery has dominated that corner of the town for almost three centuries, but it had been sitting without its top for months.

Asurveyor’s report, carried out in February last year into damage caused by erosion of its pillars, warned that part of the tower could collapse. The tower was also leaning at at angle.

The scaffolding was taken away after the top was removed, leading to fears, in January this year, that the tower - Carluke’s oldest structure, dating back to 1715, would be left like that.

But now the top has been repaired and replaced.

South Lanarkshire’s Executive Director of Housing and Technical Resources Ann Gee said: “The council was committed to preserving St Luke’s Belfry and is pleased that works to reinstate it are now complete. The work has been an excellent example of cross agency working between the Council and Historic Scotland.”
