Scottish SPCA inspector Heather Lawson said: “We are appealing to the public for any information relating to this incident.

“The fox red Labrador was found at around 9am in the popular walking area of Cardies Bridge.

"We are not sure how long he would have been there.

“Due to the extent of his injuries, the dog would sadly have been caused a considerable amount of pain and suffering.

“If anyone saw anything or has any information that could help us determine how this dog came to be injured and abandoned, please contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”

It is currently in the midst of an urgent appeal, airing online and our TV screens, to raise funds to continue its vital work.
