Balmore man Mark limbers up for London marathon with a difference

Mark (42) who now lives in Perth, Australia, was due to take part in the big run in April but it was cancelled due to covid.

Instead, runners will take on the challenge virtually on Sunday, October 4.

Mark said: “I was devastated when the London Marathon couldn’t go ahead as planned but I’m really looking forward to taking part in the event virtually.”

All the money he raises will go to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).

Mark said: “SSAFA supported me during my transition onto civilian life and I have had many friends who have leaned on SSAFA in the past for all sorts of support post-military life.

“When I left, I had nothing and effectively had to start a new life. The military was all I knew since leaving school.

“The SSAFA gave me guidance and support in all areas. They also provided me with physical items such as a fridge and TV when I found a place to live. This was literally life changing back in the day and can’t thank them enough for what they have done for me.”

Mark served in the in the 1st Battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers (now 2 Scots) Scottish Infantry between 1995 and 1999.

More than 45,000 runners across the world are expected to take on the London Marathon in their own way on 
Sunday.
