Underbank Primary School’s crossing patrol person, Mr Hugh Smith, retired on March 18, just a few days before his 80th birthday, after 16 years of dedicated service to the Crossford community.

Mr Smith who has been committed to keeping children safe for all these years won the first Best Lollipop Person award in Scotland in 2003.

The award was presented by Jack McConnell who was the Scottish First Minister at that time.

Head teacher, Mrs Margo Millar, said: “Hugh is a well-loved personality in the village and a real favourite with the pupils, parents and staff at Underbank.

“We all wish him a happy and healthy retirement.”

Mr Smith plans to enjoy his retirement by having days out with his wife and fishing at his favourite spot on the Clyde. (submitted picture).
