Goodbye to Glasgow 2014

The southside stadium hosted the closing ceremony, with Lulu, Deacon Blue, local band Prides and Kylie Minogue taking to the stage to bid farewell to Glasgow 2014 and welcome in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

Lord provost and Linn councillor Sadie Docherty thanked the people of Glasgow for their efforts during the major sporting event before handing the flag over to Tom Tate, Gold Coast mayor.

She said: “I am incredibly proud of Glasgow and, more importantly, of the Glaswegians who have been the best ambassadors for our city.

“Over the past 11 days, I have met people from all across the world as well as from all over Scotland, and it’s been very heartening to hear the good things these visitors have to say about Glasgow.

“I’ve no doubt the backing of the home crowd has played an important part in Team Scotland’s best ever Commonwealth Games medal count, and this is testament to the level of support our athletes have received in Glasgow.

“I’m sure you will agree that these Games have exceeded all of our expectations, and Glasgow has shone as the host city.”

Team Scotland broke records with 53 medals in total — 19 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze — coming fourth in the Commonwealth competition behind England, Australia and Canada.
