The foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s UK-wide foodbank network and is run in partnership with local churches and is facilitated by Kirkintilloch Baptist Church.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie officially opened the facility with organisers last week.

She said: “The work being undertaken by the Foodbank is a marvellous example of the many compassionate and publicly

spirited people in East Dunbartonshire’s communities putting in something to help those who have been hit hardest by the present economic situation.

“Food donations come from schools, businesses and individuals and the council is delighted to offer the Foodbank storage facilities and recycling bins in order to help them carry on their invaluable work in the community.”

More and more foodbanks are being set up across the country to provide much-needed help for those hit the hardest by the ongoing economic crisis.

Around 13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK.

For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis - redundancy, benefit delay or even an unexpected bill can mean going hungry.

Earlier this year, Kirkintilloch’s first foodbank was opened by members of Harestanes Baptist Church and the Chase Inn to ensure no local people go hungry.
