THE double dilemma over where and how Lanark should commemorate its dead war heroes in this Great War centenary year has been the subject of a special meeting.

As reported, the town has been riven with disagreements both over where our annual Remembrance Sunday Services should be held from now on AND what form the Royal Burgh’s commemoration of that grim anniversary should take in August.

At a specially-convened meeting of the Community Council on Thursday, the answer to the second question was found while the job of finding a solution to the first was firmly passed on to Lanark’s churches.

For the August 4 centenary, Community Council chairman Frank Gunning said: “At 11pm that night – the hour war was declared in 1914 – we want Lanarkians to gather at the Harry Smith Complex for a solemn parade to the Cross, 234 of them carrying torches and a poppy to symbolise each of the Lanark World War One casualties.”
