Couple to be reunited on Culter Fell

CULTER Fell near Biggar will this month be the scene of another emotional family ceremony featuring the scattering of a late hillwalking enthusiast’s ashes.

Jimmy Murphy, who completed the 923m ascent on several occasions, will be laid to rest on the same spot that his beloved wife Helen’s ashes were scattered 18 years ago.

The couple’s daughter-in-law Margaret Murphy, who is organising this latest ceremony, is using it to highlight a heartbreaking crime committed a year after Helen was commemorated at the peak in 1997.

Margaret said: “I want to highlight the fact that, all those years ago, somebody stole a brass plaque paying tribute to Helen.

“What that person did was totally disgusting and got me really angry for a very long time.

“I don’t know what the culprit could possibly have done with the plaque but we need to find out who it was.”
