But all 886 of them could console themselves with the fact that they are now World Record-breakers.
From Friday at 5pm, and the subsequent 24 hours, a relay of riders pedalled furiously on static bicycles at Coalburn in an attempt on the record for the greatest amount of electricity generated by bikepower within a 24 hour period.

Hide AdAnd, although they just missed breaking the main target record, the weekend's voluntary riders did smash the record for the most juice generated in a constant pedalling session.
Organiser and project manager James Kane said: "Although we did not achieve the main record, it was anything but a failure.
"We were amazed and inspired by the effort so many put into this attempt and cannot thank them enough for supporting us."
