Coalburn Silver Band became Scottish Champions at last weekend’s brass band finals held at the Perth Concert Hall.
The result will mean promotion back to the first section and an opportunity to represent Scotland at the National finals in Cheltenham in September.
Coalburn were drawn first in the competition and were on stage at 9.30am and produced a very mature account of Philip Harper’s The Mermaid of Zennor which found favour with the adjudicators Ian Brownbill and John Doyle.
The performance had everything from confident soloists to a well-balanced ensemble and the band played with careful attention to tuning.
The result was all the more special due to the amount of young home grown players, a particular mention has to go to 14 year old Anna Biggart who only joined the band in January from the Bronze (Children’s Band).
It was also wonderful for the band’s new players, Robert Butters, Malcolm Vannan and Cameron Raeburn who enjoyed a maiden victory.
The weekend was to get even better.
On Sunday afternoon the Coalburn Intermediate Band took to the stage in the 4b section and in front of a full house played a short and very musical concert programme under their musical director Kyle MacCorquodale.
Kyle, a bass trombonist has recently been announced as one of four finalists in the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2016 and will perform along with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the finals in Manchester on April 15.
Coalburn Silver Band has a busy diary and will be performing in Lanark on Friday April 29 at the Memorial Hall Centenary Concert, followed by an afternoon of music making at Hamilton Low Parks Museum on Saturday May 14 and then at the ‘Music from the Movies’ concert at the Livingstone Memorial Parish Church, Blantyre on May 21.
All the bands in the Coalburn organisation openly encourage any new players to join them, the Silver Band are in particular looking for a Soprano Cornet player while vacancies exist in all sections of the Intermediate Band and Bronze Band.
