Possible reprieve...for Edinburgh Woollen Mill
Possible reprieve...for Edinburgh Woollen Mill

BEHIND-the-scenes moves have been taking place to persuade the Edinburgh Woollen Mill to stay in this area – despite it being given notice to quit its local New Lanark base next month.

As reported in the Gazette, the knitwear business has been told by New Lanark Trust that its lease for its long-established shop in the World Heritage Village will not be renewed when it runs out in May.

The end of the 20 year relationship between the company and the village comes as part of a change in marketing strategy by the Trust to take over the space vacated by the Woollen Mill to expand its own gift shop.

Reluctant to see such a prestigious business move out of Clydesdale, Lanark Community Council member Eleanor McLean has been trying to find a new ‘home’ for the knitwear firm in Lanark.
