IT could be a very unmerry Christmas for Lanark’s beleagured shopkeepers and frustrated drivers with the news that the main route in and out of town is to be badly disrupted with electricity cable-laying from next Monday until January 7.

ScottishPower’s placing of an official public notice in this week’s Gazette of the “essential” works – laying cables under the A73 main Lanark-Carluke road from Steel’s Cross to Braidwood for up to 12 weeks – came as a nasty surpise for the recently-reformed Lanark Business Group.

Group chairman Alastair Brooks, said: ”This is all we need in the run-up to Christmas!

“I would like to find out from ScottishPower just how ‘essential’ it is to undertake this highly disruptive project at this particular time of year.”

A ScottishPower spokesman said: “This work is essential to secure supplies in the area. We are replacing the stretch of cable between Linn Mill and Braidwood substation. “We are working closely with the local authority to minimise disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
