Lanark in Bloom takes over Lanark Tolbooth this Saturday for a sale of home baking and plants to help raise money to replace its old van.

As reported previously, the 16-year-old van is on its last legs, with no hope of passing an MoT.

And without it, the stalwart volunteers who keep Lanark blooming and who do so much to brighten up the town cannot continue their work.

A crowdfunding appeal launched by Lanark Cornet-elect Iain Hughes has been promised more than £1,100 of the £10,000 needed for a second-hand van, and other donations running into hundreds of pounds have come into group chairman Ernest Romer.

But there is a long way to go yet, and members of the public have the chance to support the group on Saturday.

“We will be doing plants, home-baking and books, and there will be a tombola,” said Ernest. “All the funds are for the van and a lot more is still needed.”

Without the van, the volunteers will be unable to transport plants to the many parts of Lanark they keep in bloom, maintain their many hanging baskets and tubs or tow the bowser to water them twice daily in dry spells.

The sale runs from 10am until 4pm, or until things sell ou, and the tolbooth will be open from 6pm on Friday evening to receive donations.

Members of the tolbooth committee are serving tea and coffee upstairs to help boost their funds.
