Newton Mearns girl auditions for Nativity! The Musical

Children from across Glasgow were given the chance to sparkle and shine last weekend as they auditioned for starring roles in Nativity! The Musical.

Casting directors were in the city on Saturday, September 1 to scout out budding performers aged 9-12 to play the children from Oakmoor School at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow Wednesday 7 - Sunday 11 November.

More than 100 hopefuls battled it out at Theatre Royal on Hope Street and 15 lucky stars will be announced very soon.

Divided into groups, the children were asked to learn a dance routine and sing the song Sparkle and Shine, which features in the show.

Nativity! The Musical is written and directed by the creator and director of the blockbuster film series Nativity!, Debbie Isitt.

Debbie said: “We are looking for characterful but disciplined children who can ‘act’ as snobby and superior and yet have a sense of fun and can give over the top performances if required. We need the children to have good movement ability – marching, basic choreography and have excellent posture. They should also be able to sing confidently, have basic acting ability and enjoy performing.”

Eva Drummond, 11, from Newtown Mearns, said that because she loved the film so much she wanted to have the opportunity to be in the musical.

She added: “I was in Sleeping Beauty at the King’s last year and it was a great experience. If I get a role I think I will have an even better time.

“I got a little bit nervous in the audition but it was really exciting. They just told us what to do and I really liked the singing and dancing.”
