The campaign asks people to set a simple and positive routine that can help make a tangible difference to enjoy safe, pleasant and convenient recreation during lockdown.

A spokesperson for Paths for All said: “We know it has been a topsy-turvy year for everyone. So this winter we're bringing some cheer, motivation and inspiration to help us all to take care of ourselves. We're asking everyone to join us in pledging to walk a little every day this winter.

"Human beings aren't designed to simply sit around. Walking can gently boost our circulation, and exercise releases endorphins in our systems. This in turn boosts mood and energy, which is why you always feel better afterwards. Time spent outdoors in greenspace is also shown to reduce stress and contact with nature boosts wellbeing too.

“A daily walk can help us to beat the winter blues, socialise safely and boost our immune systems, helping us to look after our bodies and our minds during these chilly months.”

The campaign has been endorsed by the Chief Medical Officer Dr Gregor Smith for its work towards a healthier and safer Scotland.

Ms Campbell said: “At this tumultuous time for everyone, it’s important to keep motivated and active to help us all to take care of ourselves. That’s why I’m supporting the campaign to ask everyone to walk once a day this winter.

"I know that the conditions are sometimes challenging when there is snow around, however, getting outdoors safely for some exercise and in line with the current Covid-19 rules, is really important for physical and mental health.

“A daily walk can help us all to beat the winter blues and boost our immune systems, it can also help us further reconnect to what’s on our doorstep.

"We are blessed to live in a part of Scotland with access to countryside and wonderful walks - this campaign is about helping us to value our local space and the positive benefits of the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other.”
