Rigside man’s industry recognition as he gradutes university

A Rigside man has been recogised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) afer excelling in the final year of his degree course.

Calum Wiegratz (23) graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with 1st Class Masters Degree in Civil & Transportation Engineering.

ICE’s Student Prize is awarded to a student who is judged to have performed the best by his/hers peers.

Calum will receive a cash prize of £250 and an ICE certificate of merit, this should have been presented at his graduation ceremony, but it was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The former Lanark Grammar pupil was previously part of a team that won an innovation award at a New Civil Engineer’s conference, and has also been awarded a University Medal for his performance in his programme of study.

Calum has carried out volunteering work within ICE for the past three years, helping both students and members of the institution in their professional development through regular events.

In addition he became president and co-founder of the Edinburgh Napier Built Environment Society in his penultimate year of study,

Calum is now working as a Graduate Civil Engineer with Sweco on infrastructure design for wind farms and substations.

His mum Lorna said: “We are so proud of Calum as he has worked so hard through the past three years.

“It is disappointing he cannot have the fulfilment of his graduation ceremony, but hopefully they’ll hold one next year.
