Mike makes solid start to golf campaign
LESMAHAGOW Blind Golf ace Mike Mayo has made a solid start to his 2008 campaign after recording a fourth and a second place finish in his first two events of the year.
Mike and his caddie and guide Bill Routledge, who is a member at Hamilton Golf Club, travelled to Haddington GC on April 7 for the Bendal Trophy.
This was the first Scottish Blind Golf competition of the year and after a hugely successful season last year Mike was eager to continue where he left off.
The cold conditions made scoring on the Par 71 course difficult.
However a solid performance from Mike saw him finish 4th overall to get his season up and running.
Mike's round of 76 was 9 off the winning total of 67 by Cameron McDairmid.
His second event of the year saw him head to Forrester Park Resort in Dunfermline.
Mike won this event last year and a repeat performance would be the ideal platform on which to build ahead of the Greater Glasgow Classic on April 24 at Hamilton GC.
Another excellent outing saw Mike and Bill finish with a Stableford score of 33 points, just one behind the winning duo of Bennett Ward and Peter Conway.
A pleased Mike said: "Last year I won this event so the pressure was on. Unfortunately the event was a Stableford which suits the higher handicapper but we gave it our all with my Wilson Staff Nd6 Driver ripping up the fairways and my trusty Yes Golf Victoria Putter doing her bit on the greens. Bill was as always superb.
He added: "All in all I am very happy with my game and ready to give the Greater Glasgow Classic a go on April 24. I am Captain of the Greater Glasgow Blind Golf Society for 2008 and running next week's event at Hamilton Golf Club. I just hope I play well and do South Lanarkshire proud. Watch this space!"
