Lanark swimming ace is Scottish Champion
Glory for Ross at Tollcross
LANARK Swimming Club has been celebrating more success as 15-year-old Ross McCafferty became the club's third Scottish champion.
Ross took the title at Tollcross Leisure Centre after finishing with a time of 2:21.45 in the 200 metres butterfly final on April 10.
It completed a fantastic couple of weeks after winning the West and District title. However, despite this Ross wasn't quite sure if he had won.
He said: "I didn't expect to win and I wasn't quite sure I had done it because there were English and Scottish competitors in the water and I finished in third.
"The week before I won the 100 and 200 metres at the West and District and I want to keep winning.
"It was also a good meet for the club with some personal bests and a few medals."
Ross also singled out coach Karen Kelly as a major factor in his success.
He said:"My friends and family have always been there but Karen has been supporting me and training me.
"She makes a big difference and I am sure other swimmers at the club will tell you the same."
Ross' is training almost every day and his attention now turns to the Manchester Open where he will join fellow club members Victoria Gourlay and Chris Wilson in competing against English swimmers, looking to continue the success the club has had in the past year.
In January this year 15-year-old Victoria won the National Short Course Championships in Tollcross while 13-year-old Jack McCornish won a staggering seven individual gold medals at the British National DCE Junior Championships.
Mary Kelly, secretary of the club said: "We didn't expect Ross to do so well but it is a very welcome surprise especially after winning the West and District titles.
"The other kids look up to Ross and the other top swimmers, they are very good and dedicated.
"It has been a fantastic year so far, we are not a big club but hopefully there is more to come."
