Lanark United appoint John McVeigh as manager

NEW Lanark United manager John McVeigh has been reflecting fondly on his time as Airdrie assistant manager under legendary Diamonds boss Alex MacDonald.

McVeigh (52) — who has landed the Lanark job after Derek 'Tiddler' Brown decided to instead become the Moor Park club's general manager — had some incredible times at Broomfield as Airdrie enjoyed success around the early 1990s.

He said: "I remember Airdrie being drawn to play against Sparta Prague in a European Cup Winners Cup tie in September 1992.

"At that time, we had a reputation for knocking out big guns in cup competitions. Anything was possible with that team.

"We acquitted ourselves really well in the first leg at Broomfield, before they scored in the last minute to win 1- 0.

"We missed a few sitters that night. There was a guy called Nedved (future Juventus superstar Pavel) who came on as a sub.

"Sparta were so good that he couldn't even get a game!

"I bet Nedved still fondly recalls playing at Broomfield!"
