Karate king Kevin Kirk
Top club performer at Scottish Championships
MARTIAL arts marvel Kevin Kirk was top performer for Clydesdale-based Kihonkai Karate Academy at the recent KWF Scottish Championships in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall International Arena.
Kevin kicked out to become champion in the senior male kumite section, on a day of success for members of the club which meets at Blackwood, Coalburn and Douglas.
Thirteen-year-old Vanessa Miller lifted a kumite gold and two silvers for kata and kumite, while Coalburn Primary Pupil Tamsin Stewart (11), followed up her recent gold medal with a junior kumite silver.
Blackwood's Connor Morrison (9), took bronze in the same category, a feat matched by 10-year-old Douglas Primary pupil Alexander Grainger in the junior kata event.
Tracey Lees also won senior female kumite bronze in her first outing at tournament level.
And the day was rounded of by Scott Neill of Blackwood, who was third in the day's premier event - the black belt senior male kumite.
Chief Instructor Stevie Mason was thrilled at the latest haul of trophies and praised all members who took part in this high ranked event. Some of the Academy's stars have now set their sights on the 2007 World Championships in Japan next April.
