James Campbell becomes British javelin champion

ATHLETICS ace James Campbell truly made a massive point — by winning javelin gold at Friday night's UK National Championships in Birmingham.

James (22), whose parents Linda and Eddie live at Springfield Farm, Carluke, had a winning second round throw of 74m to become the first Scottish man to take the prestigious title since 1939.

He said: "That was consistent; I've had a really good start to the season.

"I've thrown over 76m three times in one competition already this season but I just haven't got hold of one to throw the European Championships qualifying distance of 78.5m.

"It's always better to have other guys throwing far to push the standard."

James's mum Linda was understandably proud of her son's efforts.

She said: "The family is thrilled that James is British Champion. He held his nerve brilliantly on the day.

"We're more thrilled than James is, because he is self-deprecating. He is never happy, so he'd only rate his performance there as a seven out of 10.

"James did well to win because Birmingham is not his favourite arena as he finds that the wind there tends to blow the javelin off course."
