In an era when teenage boys are often the first ones blamed for society’s ills, Gazette Sport is delighted to report on the outstanding achievement of Lesmahagow Bowling Club 15-year-olds John Meikle and Greg McLaughlin.

Local lads John and Greg, of Coalburn, made history by winning the Scottish under 17s lawn bowls pairs title at Ayr Northfield.

Christine McLellan, who has coached both boys for seven years, said: “It was unbelievable watching John and Greg playing the games.

“I was so nervous that I was sitting on my hands. I definitely had red hands by the end of it, as well as a very sore head because of the pressure.

“Winning a Scottish title is absolutely superb for Lesmahagow Bowling Club and the boys themselves.

“It is the first time that any of this club’s under-17 players have won a trophy at this level, so I can’t emphasise enough how proud I am of them.”
