A LARGE group of Lanarkians travelled to see Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell Racenight at Hamilton Park Racecourse, which included a nailbiting finish to the feature race watched by 5000 spectators.

First place in the £24,000 Silver Bell Handicap was claimed by 8/1 shot Edmaaj from 12/1 rated Scrapper Smith with 12/1 shot Deepsand in third.

“It was a tremendous night and it was great to see such a massive crowd,” said Lanark Community Council chairman Frank Gunning. “I’ve never seen such a big attendance at Hamilton Races.”

The Silver Bell triumph made it a personal best season’s total of 56 winners in 2012 for victorious York-based trainer David O’Meara.

The delighted 35-year-old, who is originally from County Cork in Ireland, said he wasn’t surprised at Edmaaj’s success despite being relatively unfancied at eight to one.
