MORE than 500 young runners battled soft and muddy underfoot conditions at the Clydesdale Sports Council Primary Schools Cross-Country Championships.

Biggar Rugby Club was the venue for an event which saw P6 and P7 youngsters compete in boys and girls individual and team contests.

“There has been a great attendance at this event for the past few years,” said Colin McKendrick of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture.

“The course was very tough and it was made tougher by the fact that underfoot conditions were very heavy.

“It was extremely wet and muddy so the event was a great stamina test for all the runners.”

Respective boys and girls P6 races were won by Connor McIntyre (St Athanasius PS) and Jessica Robson (Lanark PS), while boys and girls P7 honours were claimed by Hayden Rafferty (Biggar PS) and Rachel Hunter (Crawforddyke PS) respectively.
