A BATTLE is underway to try to preserve the long-term future of Ravenstruther and Cleghorn Over-60s Club, whose members enjoy carpet bowls sessions twice a week.

Club president Ian Alexander (79), told the Gazette that an influx of new members was required to ensure the club – founded around 100 years ago – had a viable future.

“It would be awful if the club folded,” Ian said.

“It would be a real blow to the local area, as a lot of people around here depend on this club as being somewhere to go for a blether and a game of bowls.

“We have an even number of female and male members, with several of them being widows or widowers.

“Our club gets people out of the house and promotes exercise, camaraderie and companionship.

“So the club having to close would be a nightmare scenario for them.”
