Clydesdale’s many Motherwell FC supporters can guarantee European football next season for a team in the famous claret and amber kit!

However, it’s not so much the ‘Steelmen’ as the ‘Steelboys’ they’ll be sending off to sunny Spain next summer.

The Motherwell Football Community 2006 youth team, featuring no less than seven Clydesdale lads, is currently raising the cash needed to head to the continent to take part in an international boys’ football championship and some of their families and friends are going to great lengths to make the dream trip possible.

In fact, one of their main supporters, Motherwell 2006 Parents Committee member Jack Reid, of Lanark, recently ran the Glasgow Half Marathon in aid of the cause - and he’s the grandad of one of the squad, Aiden Gwynne.

Building contractor Jack, now recovered from the 1hr 54min 54 second run, which raised £300, told the Gazette: “We have the committee which is working hard towards hopefully taking the boys to Spain next year.

“In the team we have some fantastic young talent from Lanark and the surrounding area. There is, of course, our Aiden, but also from Lanark there’s Kyle Wilson, Ross Noble and Kenzie McCulloch plus John Goulding from Rosebank and Luca Rossi and Xander Jones from Carluke.Stonehouse lad Aaron
Weir’s dad plays for Carluke Rovers.”

The committee ran a Race Night which raised a further £2,300, and would like to thank sponsors including Brooks Shops, Hazelhead Nursing Care, Gouldings Garden Centre, SCG Supplies Ltd, Strongman Removals, Your Move First, ABC Health and Beauty, Cross Barbers, Thomson Holidays, Bank of Scotland, The Wee Thackit, McCulloch Joinery Services, Lanark Construction, Abernethy Electrical, City Blinds, WM Gardiner Specialist Buildling and Jack’s own company,
Jack Reid Buillding Contractor.
