YET another one of Lanark’s once ‘men only’ institutions – the town’s Rotary Club – has moved with the times and welcomed its first lady member.
She is businesswoman Val Barr, sucessfully proposel by member Ian Hodge and formally welcomed to the club by President Alistair Mackintosh at the club’s latest meeting in the Crown Tavern.
In his introduction of Val to members, Ian said: “Val has always been a high achiever, from becoming Deputy Head Girl at her school in Glasgow to achieving an excellent degree at University, followed by gaining a senior marketing position with John Menzies.
“After some years in marketing, Val built up expertise in financial knowledge in consultancy before moving to join Executive Benefit Services, based here in Lanark’s Hope Street.”
“With this level of experience, I am confident that Val will quickly become a valued member of the club.”
As for president Alistair Mackintosh, he expressed surprise that there hadn’t been a lady member before.
He explained that there was never a hard and fast rule against females joining Rotary clubs.
Alistair added: “It is hoped that Val will be the first of many ladies becoming interested in joining the Rotary Club of Lanark.”
