Fingers crossed for better weather tonight, when people in Biggar and Carnwath see out the auld year with their traditional bonfires.

The huge pile of wood in front of the Corn Exchange has been growing steadily, and great-grandmother Chris Smith will light Biggar’s historic bonfire at 9.30pm on Hogmanay, tonight, after the torchlight procession up through the town.

“It is a great honour,” said Chris, who turns 88 in January. She is still better known in Biggar as Chris Paul, whose family had the fishmonger and greengrocers in High Street for over 60 years.

Carnwath 2000 are organising are organising the annual bonfire and firework display in the Sir John Mann Park.

The procession will initially gather at Carnwath Golf course from 8pm and leave from the car park at 8.30pm and make its way to the park where the bonfire will be lit by Mr and Mrs Meldrum assisted by Gala Queen Olivia Grant. The fireworks will start at approximately 9.30pm.
