RESIDENTS of the Douglas Valley will have another opencast coal mine on their doorstep following the decision by South Lanarkshire Council to grant planning permission at a site near Hawksland.

The north extension to the Broken Cross site was approved by the council’s planning committee at a meeting on Tuesday.

Scottish Coal was granted permission to extract one million tonnes of coal from the site.
