IN visiting New Lanark on Tuesday, the First Minister of Scotland could hardly have chosen a more symbolic spot to hit out at what she sees as the social injustices inflicted on folks north of the border from Westminster.

The internationally important cradle of humane conditions for the working man – and woman – was deliberately selected by Nicola Sturgeon to launch the SNP’s General Election campaign plank, – to end the long austerity measures taken by the Coalition Government after the 2008 financial crash.

Surrounded by the ancient mills – and a large press corps – in the World Heritage village, she claimed these policies were having a “devastating impact on communities across the country”.
