VOLUNTEERS from the new Clydesdale Food Bank were overwhelmed by donations from the public at Tesco stores in Carluke and Lanark on Saturday.

“The response was magnificent,” said Liz Barthram, one of the organisers.

As reported in last week’s Gazette, three Carluke churches – St John’s, St Andrew’s and Kirkton – are setting up the food bank.

They were concerned at reports that ordinary people, the unemployed and those on low wages, could not afford to put food on the table, or had to choose between paying unexpected bills or feeding the family.
