Raising the roof!

FLOWERS are bursting into summer bloom high above the World Heritage village of New Lanark on the rooftop of Mill Number 2.

Visitors to New Lanark Visitor Centre are able to view the newly landscaped Roof Garden and access the rooftop Viewing Platform.

From this vantage point they have a spectacular bird's-eye view of the historic village, the stunning natural beauty of the River Clyde meandering past, and the woodland of the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve.

As we spring into summer there is plenty for families to enjoy in the wide variety of exhibition and activity areas at the award-winning Visitor Centre.

And the Gazette has two sets of family tickets (admitting two adults and four children), worth 27.95 each, to pass on to lucky readers.

Activity highlights are the New Millennium Experience, allowing visitors to travel through time on the magical, futuristic ride, and discover Robert Owen's vision of a better future; and the Annie McLeod's Story - inviting you to enter the spirit world of New Lanark to hear and be amazed as the ghost of a millgirl from 1820 magically appears in front of you.

Visitors can also find out how New Lanark villagers used to live in Owen's time in the restored Classroom, Millworkers' House, Village Store, and in Robert Owen's House, and see how people used to work, with the exhibition of working textile machinery.

There is also an Interactive Gallery - have fun in a 21st century playroom of sound and light.

And the latest attraction is the imaginatively designed Roof Garden which incorporates a central water feature, decorative planting and sculptures of birds, animals and insects created by a number of different artists, using a variety of materials - bronze, wood, and recycled metal. Children can discover the wildlife of the Garden with the Creature Quest Trail.

Award-winning Garden Designer and Landscape Architect, Douglas Coltart of Viridarium, has designed the Roof Garden.

Douglas commented: "This has been a really exciting challenge. The Roof Garden is a unique and incredibly interesting addition to the range of visitor experiences that are available at New Lanark."

The village is surrounded by the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve, which offers superb woodland walks - see Corra Linn - a spectacular 85ft waterfall. Bring a picnic and enjoy the scenery, or visit the Mill Pantry for refreshments and light meals open daily from 10am to 5pm.

There is ample free parking and shopping is available at the Gift Shop and a huge Edinburgh Woollen Mill store.

Visitor Centre ticket prices are adult 6.95, child/concession 5.95, family (2+2) 21.95, Family (2+4) 27.95. It is open 11am to 5pm all year, and closed Decmber 25 and January 1.

For your chance to win a set of family tickets, simply answer the following question:
