IN one move, Lanark’s long quest for a place to bury its future dead ended this week – AND the town’s Common Good Fund scooped a £90,000 boost.

With space fast running out at the existing Lanark Cemetery and after many unsuccessful attempts to find a new town burial ground, South Lanarkshire Council decided on Tuesday to buy land at Springbank Farm near Ravenstruther to create a new cemetery.

And because the land is in the ownership of the town’s Common Good Fund, the council is writing it a cheque this week for £90,000 to buy the site.

This move instantly trebled the current size of the fund.

However, some locals are already questioning another decision taken this week, claiming that what South Lanarkshire Council has given with one hand it has taken away with another.
