New Lanark Victorian Fair 2009

EVEN a Hollywood studio couldn't have built a better set for the Victorian extravaganza that prompted hundreds of people to turn time-traveller for the day in New Lanark.

For two decades now the New Lanark Victorian Fair has been the nearest thing the World Heritage Village has to its own gala day.

And even the dreichness of a typical Scottish September Sabbath couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of hosts and visitors alike.

As usual, the members of the organising New Lanark Village Group threw themselves into the spirit of the event by donning 19th century costume.

This was set against the backdrop of the historic riverside mill buildings - giving visitors a true glimpse of what the place was really like 150 years ago.

Playing his part in the centre of the celebrations was Dr Jim Arnold, director of the New Lanark Trust, suitably kitted out in a frock coat and topper.

"For the kind of weather we've been having recently and what was forecast for today, it's a pretty good turnout," was his verdict on the size of this year's crowds.

Hundreds decided to risk a drenching to go to the village to enjoy the array of stalls and entertainers that have become the fair's hallmark.

Among the attractions were home-baking, bric-a-brac and book stalls, the Clyde Valley Birds of Prey, a mini-menagerie featuring everything from creepy lizards to cute rabbits and the young cast of Lanark's ICE theatre group who staged a magnificent re-enactment of routines from their recent hit show, Moulin Rouge.
