Mainshill hosts first Scottish Climate Camp

A NEW army of demonstrators have arrived at Mainshill Wood, near Douglas — further delaying work.

Climate Camp has brought almost 100 demonstrators to the site, with even more set to join as the protest enters its fifth week.

Billed as the first Scottish event of its kind, the Camp for Climate Action in Scotland is expected to attract hundreds of protestors.

Dan Glass, from Climate Camp Scotland, told the Gazette: "There is plenty of support from the people of Douglas.

"And it's not surprising because, from where I'm standing, I can already see two mines. People don't want a third and have every right to be angry."

In recent weeks, the relationship between demonstrators and Douglas and Angus Estates has hit rock bottom.

An Estate spokesman said: "It is unfortunate for this area that Climate Camp Scotland has come to Mainshill Wood.

"The protestors' occupation of Mainshill is both illegal and hampering the Estate's activities on the site.''

Meanwhile, Clydesdale MSP Karen Gillon has voiced concerns in the Scottish Parliament as to whether new planning conditions were followed for the new opencast mine at Mainshill.
