Lesmahagow MP explains reasons for voting against gay marriage
Michael McCann - New Labour
LESMAHAGOW MP Michael McCann has described the Government’s proposals for same-sex marriage as ill-conceived, poorly drafted and a recipe for future litigation.
Michael was commenting after speaking in the House of Commons debate on the subject last week and voting against the second reading of the Marriage (same sex couples) Bill.
He said: “This is an extremely sensitive issue which creates strong feelings on either side of the debate.
“The problem with the Government’s position is that this is quite simply a badly constructed draft piece of legislation.
“The Government Minister responsible, Maria Miller, concedes that the quadruple lock, designed to protect churches, is underpinned by case law.
“Case law is created by cases and that leave churches, mosques and synagogues vulnerable to legal challenge if they refuse to marry same-sex couples.
“In effect, a court ruling at a future date could force them to do so against their will. For those reasons I could not support the Bill.”
