WITH the 2012 Lanimer celebrations now well underway, Lanimer Committee chairman Millar Stoddart is hoping that this year’s Lanimer Week will be bigger and better than ever.

Already this week the Kirkin’ of the Cornet and the Perambulation of the Marches have taken place on Sunday and Monday.

And as the Gazette went to press on Tuesday afternoon the official Lord Cornet’s Ride Out was getting underway - and that’s not forgetting the extra events planned as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

And all this before Lanark’s “Day of Days” on Thursday which will see a spectacular procession march down the High Street before 12-year-old Niamh Shanks is crowned the 2012 Lanimer Queen by Joy Reilly.

It’s a huge job for the members of the Lanimer Committee in organising such a wide variety of events every year but Millar, who took over as chairman from David Strachan last year, is sure that once again Lanark will put on another fantastic show.

He said: “The crowning of the Lanimer Queen is the pinnacle of the Lanimer celebrations.

“However, it is always great to see the procession and the various pageants working their way down the High Street with the crowds either side. What a spectacle!

“Without the support and co-operation of people who spend a great deal of time and effort in preparing the various tableaux and pageants, we would not have, arguably, one of the best processions in the whole of the country.”
